The PYLC Program is open to area students in grades 7-12. The purpose of the Program is to encourage students from all backgrounds to learn more about local government and build skills to better serve as leaders among their peers. It is designed to develop leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as encourage community service, civic participation, and philanthropy in young people now and in the future.

PYLC students learn not only about local government and the inner workings of a municipality, but they experience first-hand what it means to be an elected official and/or an appointed member of a board or commission. Students identify key issues, campaign for office, and hold an election. The PYLC elected officials then interview candidates and hire key city staff, as well as appoint board members and commissioners. PYLC key city staff then hire department heads and other personnel, essentially creating their own PYLC Town Hall and together discuss, consider, and make decisions to resolve issues and define policy.

The Town of Pantego staff also actively participates in the Program. Students will discover what’s involved in Town Hall administration, what fiscal accountability and budgets are all about, and what the Community Development and Public Works departments do. Along the way students enjoy many exciting opportunities. Previous activities have included a behind-the-scenes tour of both the Fire and Police departments, a full mock jury trial in Pantego Court, and a trip to Austin to see the Texas House and Senate in action.

By the end of year, students are able to see how it all ties together neatly to provide every day services to the community-at-large. They also learn about Economic Development and how important it is to have a vision and plan for the future to ensure the Town remains viable for future generations. It’s an excellent opportunity for them to meet and get to know the Town of Pantego’s elected officials, appointed board members and commissioners, Town staff, and members of the community.

The PYLC Program allows students to be a Council-In-Action and actively participate in the Town’s community events and activities. Students should come with a positive attitude, expecting to learn in a relaxed and casual atmosphere, and plan to leave with a smile knowing they can make a positive difference in the world not only as individuals but as part of their local community.

PYLC meets the third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. - Students are encouraged to show up at 6:00 p.m. for free food and to socialize with their peers.
